Day 144 – 23 December 2009: to Vang Vieng

Vang Vieng is a seven hour drive from Luang Prabang.

Vang Vieng turns out to be an Ozzy and, to a lesser extent, American backpacker oasis, contrasting with Luang Prabang which is much more adult and French flavoured. This town wouldn’t, I think, exist without the backpackers. It’s another dirt track town with most buildings being very open basic wood structures.

With our truck parked outside the hotel, some American teenagers come over from the Irish Bar opposite to ask where we came from. When I answer, one says ‘no way man, this truck came all the way from London!?!?’ Within half an hour of arriving, quite a lot of our group are in the Irish bar, including me. Not many Irish bars in the world have a facia of bamboo, I would hazard a guess.

The bar offers a free ‘bucket’ with every four meals ordered. This ‘bucket’ is in fact an actual bucket filled with an unidentified spirit with coke. It’s not good for mixing with beer, as I find out later.
