Laurie and I go walking around Kathmandu, passing by the temples at Durbar Square towards a post office away from the tourist filled streets. The part of Kathmandu we find ourselves in has separate pavements and roads, so is a little more relaxing. Also, I note that the markets where the locals shop are full of cheap western style clothes and none of the stuff being sold in Thamel to the travellers.
At 4ish we reconnect with much of the UK to Oz group at a bar for big John’s birthday drinks. Tracy and him have, as is consistent with their policy so far, upgraded to a ‘5 star hotel’. Having told John that I have just posted a large package to friends in Australia to catch up with later in my journey, he says the concierge at the hotel told him that he shouldn’t expect packages to get to their destination when posted from here. I feel extra insecure having put the value of the package, which includes a guitar tuner and a plug-on pick-up, at the equivalent to £55 on the customs slip that gets stuck to the package.
