Day 81 - 21 October 2009: Pokhara

Today is a drive day to Pokhara via some of the world’s most spectacular roadway as we enter the Himalayas. Not that the road itself is spectacular as it would have seen off less sturdy vehicles than our big orange truck.

On the road through town while looking for a suitable hotel, we pass the Everest Steak House. This causes some cheer amongst some of our party, steak having been off the menu since we left Europe a couple of months ago. After we find a hotel and the usual waiting around to be allocated rooms, I follow others to the steak house. I am only going to jealously observe as my stomach is still not feeling quite right, so I just drink beer instead while John, Tracy and others sink their knives into big bloody steaks, each one enough to feed a family of four (actually Tracy had ordered a ‘half steak’, which was only about 16 oz = 500g).
We are coming up to the two week break in our itinerary, which gives everyone a chance to go off and do their own thing before meeting up in Kathmandu to continue our journey. I have decided to go on a trek up to Annapurna Base Camp with Laurie as she needs someone to go with, although I am not entirely convinced she knows what she is getting herself into. The guidance says this trek will take eight to twelve days, and she doesn’t want to hire a porter to carry anything, meaning we’ll have rucksacks on our back all the way.
