Day 168 – 16 January 2010: Bangkok, the Pope and his wife

However, the truck is not allowed into central Bangkok, so we all pile into taxis for a lengthy ride to our hotel, which is around the corner from the Khoa San Road. We have another lengthy wait to get into our hotel rooms as we arrive too early.

In the taxi, Laurie spots one of the many portraits of the Thai King & Queen which are scattered around Bangkok. ‘Who is that, the Pope and his wife?’ she asks. She is a joy.

Hughie, the deeply accented Irishman, is leaving the group in Bangkok as he is going back to China to teach English to schoolchildren. We are all looking forward to a generation of Chinese children counting up to ‘one, two, tree’. In the evening, we have a leaving party for him at the Mulligans Irish bar on the corner of the Khoa San Road.
