Day 154 – 02 January 2010: coral reefs, a sea bar and synchronized bombing

Our first stop on the boat trip is to an island full of other snorkelers on boat trips. There is a small coral reef here teeming with colourful tropical fish. You can hire small circular rafts here with glass bottoms to view the fish underneath, although I stick with the snorkelling.

For lunch, we moor up near a fish farm and get served small helpings of various local dishes on the top deck of the boat. Three boats are tied together and our hosts liven up proceedings by having a band playing incomprehensible cover versions of classic rock songs, and then dumping a floating cooler in the sea declaring happy hour open. We all dive in the get served some fortified wine while being buoyed up by tube floats.

A while later, we take to diving from the top of the boat. Hughie, Big John, Pete and I attempt to do some synchronized diving, but the pictures Rhi takes from the sea show us to be quite inept at this.

Our last stop of the boat trip is to an Aquarium based within and around a strange ship shaped building built largely with rock material, like some mythical living sea coral ship. There are quite a few interesting creatures inside, but not quite as interesting as the building itself. Outside, there’s some large salt water pools homing sea turtles and some of the bigger fish, although unfortunately I see this is polluted with dumped rubbish.

Nearby here is one of Nah Trang’s biggest attractions, a Vietnamese version of Disneyworld, but we don’t visit as we don’t have the time or an inclination to spend the money. You can get to it from Nah Trang itself, there being a cable cabin lift across the bay from just outside the main beach area.

In the evening I venture to an Indian restaurant, but the food is disappointing.
