Day 167 – 15 January 2010: Exit Cambodia, enter Thailand

Cambodia Pictures: Cambodia January2010

The border passing for the people into Thailand is quick and easy and we have lunch in the town of huts on the Thai side of the border. However, the truck does not yet have insurance for Thailand, so JC and Lucinda spend several hours negotiating a reasonable price for it.

We have had our first ‘dropper’, i.e. a person has left the group prematurely. Somewhat out of the blue, Brummie Garth, who after his arrest in PP and had decided to go ahead of the truck to Thailand, has emailed to say that he wants to spend more time in Malaysia and Indonesia than we are planning and so isn’t coming back. He is planning to stay in Australia for at least a year when he arrives there anyway, like several others on the truck. Essex Sam is also away from the truck, having gone on without us from Nah Trang in Vietnam. Personally, I am considering leaving the truck for a while in Malaysia and Indonesia, and possibly rejoining for the Oz leg.

After finally getting the truck through the border, we have to bushcamp. This time, we find an open and flat piece of land just off the highway with its own swimming pool, a large square man-made ditch filled with water. Nobody goes in for a swim though as we can’t see what is in it, except to note that there some large fish swimming around it.

With Garth having left his tent on the truck, a group of us decide to see how many people we can get into it, so we can send the picture onto him. I am a little reluctant to take part as, while in Iran, Garth had once relieved himself into a bag in the tent. I jump in on top of Lucinda so that my body doesn’t touch the floor of the tent.
