Day 161 – 09 January 2010: Exit Vietnam, enter Cambodia. Phnom Penh and cowboy c*cksuckers

The trip to Phnom Penh takes seven hours including a relatively easy border crossing, us having the advantage of not being in the Big Orange Truck thus avoiding the hassle of the customs check.

My first impressions of Cambodia are that poverty here is much more evident than in Vietnam or even Laos. It gives the impression of a slightly less crowded version of India.

Our hostel in Phnom Penh is in a pleasant setting, it being built on stilts over the edge of the lake, with a nice lounging bar / restaurant area for us to gather in. However, it is very basic. The shower is just a pipe, and there is no sink. The lake below us is the sanitation system and the rubbish dump.

I go to dinner at a nearby restaurant where I have some flavoursome tacos. Some of the UK to Oz group gather here, and we start drinking cocktails consisting of butterscotch liquor and Bailey’s. Mmmm, nice, if a bit girly. Oh and they are called ‘Cowboy Cocksuckers’.

For the first time on this trip, in Cambodia I find all pricing is in USD. The ATMs only deal in USD too.
