Day 211 – 28 February 2010: Alice Springs and water in the river shock

Predictably enough, the rain and wind lasted all night. I get up to pack away the tent in a dry break, but the wind means I struggle to get the thing in its bag, so it’s wet from the ground anyway.

To Alice Springs, where the River Todd is flowing. This may seem like an unremarkable statement, but the annual ‘Henley on Todd’ Regatta has been cancelled this year, making it the only regatta in the world to be called off due to the presence of water in the river. Usually the ‘boats’ are like Flintstones cars, i.e. bottomless and propelled by foot power. For 95% of the year the river bed is dry. Now, however, it is flowing violently like an un-navigable white water rapid. There is even a TV crew standing by the river under an umbrella to film a news report.

We camp within sight of Ayer’s Rock / Uluru so that we can get to it for sunrise the next morning. It’s not raining!
this is a TV news crew here to report the presence of water in the river
